Flannery

An opening bid of 2 (or 2  by agreement), showing a minimum opening hand in the 11-15 HCP range or so, with a 4 card Spade suit, and a 5 card (or perhaps longer) heart suit.  Responder can signoff in 2 or 2 , or seek more information with 2NT.

Openers responses to 2NT are:

3  -  3 clubs (4-5-1-3)

           (Also called a Club  Fragment)

3  -  3 diamonds (4-5-3-1)

           (Also called a Diamond Fragment)

3  -  usually shows a minimum type (4-5-2-2)

3  -  usually shows a maximum type (4-5-2-2)

Pairs employing Flannery and 5 Card Major openings, might treat the sequence 1  -  1   as promising a 5 card spade suit, as opener would have opened Flannery with 5 hearts and 4 Spades.
