Rescue Bids

Many pairs (particularly those playing Weak NT) use rescue sequences when the opening of 1NT is doubled.  Possible sequences might be, after  1NT-X :

XX   :  good hand, prepare to X them

2    :  run out with Clubs and a higher suit

2    :  run out with Diamonds and higher

2    :  run out with Hearts and Spades

2    :  run out with Spades

Pass :  Forces opener to XX and will then

            bid suit - a 1 suited run out type

Another treatment:

Pass  :  good hand, lets play 1NT-X

2      :  natural Clubs  to play

2      :  natural Diamonds to play

2      :  natural Hearts to play

2      :  natural Spades to play

XX     :  Shows a 2 suited type run out hand

              Opener bids 2C with 3 or more Clubs

              Otherwise opener bids 2D

Many other sequences are possible, and can be played after 1NT overcalls and the auction 1NT-p-p-X-p-p-??  as well.
