Two Way Checkback Stayman

After openers rebid of 1NT, both 2 and 2 are used as versions of Stayman.

a)  1      1

       1NT   2 (invite only)

       2     :  4 diamond, not 3 hearts

                   minimum 1NT

       2     :  3 hearts, minimum 1NT

  **  2     :  4 spades, minimum 1NT

       2NT  :  Clubs, not 3 hearts, minimum 1NT

       3     : 5 clubs, 2 hearts accept invite

       3     : 4 diamonds, 2 hearts accept

       3     : 3 hearts, accept invite

   ** 3     :  4 spades, 2 hearts, accept

       3NT  :  accept, 3-3-3-4

** Weak NT players frequently bypass spades to rebid 1NT.  This sequence would not normally be possible after a 12-14 1NT rebid as opener would prefer to bid the spades to the NT.

b)    1      1

        1NT   2  (game forcing checkback)

The auction is now forced to game.  Opener bids in a similar manner to the above, but jumps to the 3 level are not necessary, and partnership may discuss their significance as regards distribution and HCP's.
