Law of Total Tricks

The total number of tricks available in a bridge hand is equal to the sum of the number of trumps held by each side.

Suppose, for example that N/S are bidding spades with an 8 card trump fit, and E/W hearts, with a 9 card trump fit.  The total tricks available will be 8+9=17.  So, if N/S can make only 2  (8 tricks) then there are 9 tricks left for E/W, so they can make 3 .  If N/S can make lets say 4 (10 tricks), then there are only 7 tricks left for E/W so 5 would go down 4, not a good sacrifice at any vulnerability.

"The Law" starts losing accuracy when one side has a preponderance of high cards, or when a flat 4-3-3-3 hand is present.  Generally speaking it is a valuable tool in competitive bidding situations.
